Healing Intergenerational Roots (HIR) Wellness Center is a grassroots nonprofit organization that provides free mental health counseling and wellness services to American Indian and undeserved communities in the Greater Milwaukee area. Our services are intergenerational as we support children, youth, adults, and our elders with mental health counseling and wellness programming such as support groups and workshops.
HIR mission requires a community collective. Without the mind, body, heart, and spirit of our community members, programming at HIR would not be possible. Lea Denny, therapist, Founder and CEO, launched this non-profit in 2017 with the vision to open a center that will honor the voice of the community, and the legacy and strength of their ancestors' stories for intergenerational healing.
HIR sets out to be part of the next generation of mental health centers and therapists that address systemic issues impacting mental health such as domestic violence, human trafficking, violence, suicide, historical and racial trauma within the healing work that we do. Through this process, HIR aims to decolonize mental health practices by inviting clients to integrate their cultural practices and teachings into the therapy process.
In addition, HIR uses an empowerment model, developed by Lea Denny, called Community Activated Medicine (CAM). These are events to address community-felt and lived mental health concerns and create space for community-focused healing. CAM events mean the people are the medicine and community action is the agent of change. We take our therapists and counseling interns outside the office and into the community where they can meet the immediate needs of our community members. To make this happen, we partner with local tribal agencies and local organizations and training institutions to acquire our interns and volunteers. Despite not having funds for advertising about our services, word of mouth is spreading quickly about the services that we offer and creating an unforeseen barrier to care, having the financial means to grow our services fast enough to meet the growing demand.
Since 2017, HIR Wellness Center has grown to provide free services to over 1,500 people. As we continue to grow, we need the continued support from the community. Our motto is, "Illness Becomes Wellness When I becomes We - Healing All Nations, One Tribe". Together We heal. We thank you for taking the time to learn about us and support our vision of intergenerational healing and wellness! Join our movement to heal our generations!
We thank you for your support!
